Sajou "Tartan Model" Fabric Embroidery Scissors. Made in France.
These embroidery scissors are inspired by sewing items covered in tartan paper which were extremely fashionable all through the 19th century. Originally made in Scotland in the town of Maughline, their production was quickly spread all over Europe.
These are made from genuine fabric instead of paper, which has been confined within a layer of crystal acetate. The delicate blades are engraved with the Sajou name.
Quality scissors can be recognized by, among other things, their pairing marks: these are the signs that the blades have been perfectly adjusted for the start of their fabrication.
This is a number that you can see on the interior of each of the blades.
This number is different on each pair of scissors. It should be pointed out that it takes a dozen qualified people to make each pair.
In the 19th century such scissors would need the craftsmanship of a cutler for the steel blades and an ornamental turner for the mother of pearl work. Nowadays the distribution of the work is quite similar: the blades are still made by a master cutler, and the handles are created in our own ateliers. The difference with the vintage models is that new are more solid and extremely light, making them a joy to use.
